Democratic lawmakers have signaled that the new Congress, set to convene in January, will launch a series of subpoenas targeting President Donald Trump’s business network and senior executives at major technology firms. The warning follows the party’s decisive victory in the November 2026 midterm elections, which gave Democrats control of both the House and the Senate. Senators and representatives cited concerns ranging from alleged crypto‑related enrichment by the Trump family to the growing political influence of Big Tech and the rapid expansion of artificial‑intelligence platforms.

Subpoena threats aimed at Big Tech

Senator Ed Markey, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, told reporters that “they are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing,” referring to anticipated requests for documents and testimony from technology CEOs. According to Punchbowl News, executives expected to appear before the House Oversight Committee, the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the Senate Commerce Committee include Elon Musk (SpaceX/Twitter), Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, and Nvidia chief Jensen Huang. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic founder Dario Amodei were also identified as potential witnesses to discuss the safety and deployment of their AI products.

House Oversight Committee nominee Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to chair the new committee, pledged to pursue what he called “the Trump Crime Family, corporate corruption, DHS and ICE abuses, and the cover‑up of the Epstein files.” In a press briefing, Garcia warned that anyone connected to the former president should “lawyer up.” The focus on crypto stems from a November 2025 staff report by House Judiciary Democrats that alleged Trump used his office to profit from cryptocurrency ventures tied to foreign interests while weakening enforcement mechanisms. Virginia Senator Mark Warner highlighted the former president’s earnings from a memecoin during campaign rallies, describing the situation as “unprecedented grift and corruption.”

The report also noted that Trump’s family has amassed billions through these crypto activities, a claim that Democrats say warrants further congressional scrutiny.

Implications for AI and energy policy

Beyond the crypto angle, the Democratic agenda includes tighter oversight of artificial‑intelligence development. Lawmakers expressed concern about the electricity demand of data centers powering AI models and the adequacy of safeguards for AI‑generated content. By calling executives from OpenAI and Anthropic to testify, the committees aim to assess whether existing regulations sufficiently address risks such as misinformation, bias, and market disruption.
