MetaMask adds Stellar as default network on mobile and extension
MetaMask integrated Stellar on October 29, adding a new address to existing multichain accounts. Users must fund XLM reserves and manually activate trustlines to receive tokens like USDC.

- MetaMask now includes a Stellar address in existing multichain accounts for both mobile and extension users.
- Receiving assets like USDC on Stellar requires users to manually activate token trustlines and maintain XLM reserves.
- The wallet warns that bridging funds without pre-activating the necessary trustline can result in permanent loss of assets.
MetaMask has officially integrated the Stellar network into its mobile application and browser extension, a move that introduces a new address type to existing multichain accounts. According to CryptoSlate, the rollout occurred on October 29, positioning the payments network as a default option for users within the wallet ecosystem. This update allows users to manage Stellar assets alongside their existing holdings on other blockchains, derived directly from their current recovery phrases.
The Defiant also reported on the integration, noting that Stellar is now a standard network option within the MetaMask interface. This expansion aims to provide users with additional routes for stablecoin payments and asset management without requiring them to switch wallets or manage separate recovery phrases for different networks.
Manual setup required for token reception
Despite the automatic addition of the Stellar address, users cannot immediately receive certain assets like USDC without completing specific setup steps. CryptoSlate reported that the documented flow requires a new, unfunded address to first receive a minimum deposit of one XLM. This initial funding is necessary to cover the base account reserve mandated by the Stellar network.
To prepare for receiving specific tokens, users must manually navigate to the token management section of the wallet. They are required to enable the desired token, select the entry marked as inactive, and confirm the activation transaction. Merely adding a token to the visible list does not complete the process; the trustline must be formally activated on the blockchain to ensure the account can accept that specific asset.
Reserve rules and funding implications
The integration is constrained by Stellar's current reserve rules, which require an ordinary unsponsored account to maintain a base reserve of one XLM. Additionally, the network requires another 0.5 XLM to be reserved for each ordinary trustline created. CryptoSlate noted that other account entries can increase this minimum requirement, and users must always have spendable XLM available to pay transaction fees above the locked reserve.
While the locked balance remains in the account, it cannot be used for the activation process itself. The reserve increase and the associated network fee must be paid from spendable funds. The source highlighted that Stellar's network rules allow another account to sponsor these reserves, including the base account reserve, which could potentially alter the funding requirements for some users.
Risks associated with cross-chain bridging
MetaMask has issued specific warnings regarding the interaction between cross-chain bridges and Stellar trustlines. According to CryptoSlate, a swap between tokens already on Stellar can automatically create a trustline within the wallet. However, for a cross-chain swap into a non-XLM token, the receiving trustline must be activated manually before the transaction is initiated.
