Dubai‑based blockchain startup Utexo announced that it will bring Tether’s dollar‑backed stablecoin back to Bitcoin after a three‑year pause. The public launch is scheduled for Nov. 28, 2026, and will employ the RGB protocol to keep asset transaction details off‑chain while using Bitcoin as the settlement layer. Lightning Network support is expected in the first quarter of 2027, enabling private and near‑instant transfers. According to Cointelegraph, Tether led Utexo’s $7.5 million seed round in March, and the new token will be issued under Tether’s USDT0 protocol.

How RGB and Lightning Enable Private, Fast Payments

RGB, under development since 2016, allows users to issue and transfer digital assets through contracts tied to Bitcoin without recording each transfer on the public blockchain. Participants validate transfers themselves, while cryptographic commitments anchored to Bitcoin secure the system. The protocol is described as Bitcoin‑native rather than a sidechain or rollup. When combined with Lightning, USDT can move through payment channels without a base‑layer transaction for every transfer, achieving settlement times of roughly 100 milliseconds, which Utexo’s CEO Viktor Ihnatiuk says is faster than Solana, Sui or Aptos.

Bridge Mechanics and Security Considerations

Utexo’s USDT Mint product, opened to early access on Oct. 22, requires locking USDT0 on Arbitrum before minting an equivalent amount on Bitcoin. Redemption burns the RGB asset and releases the locked funds on the source network. This design introduces bridge risk, as the security of the Bitcoin‑based USDT depends on the integrity of the Arbitrum lock‑up mechanism. Cointelegraph notes that bridges have historically been targets for hackers, and while the Mint service has been audited by Oxorio, the full report is not publicly available.

Market Outlook and Competitive Landscape

The stablecoin market is dominated by roughly $300 billion on Ethereum, Tron and other networks, according to DeFiLlama. Utexo does not aim to replicate Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem; instead, it focuses on business payments that value confidentiality and Bitcoin’s settlement security. The company claims it can selectively disclose transaction data for compliance and respond to law‑enforcement requests. Bitcoinist reports that Utexo targets at least $1 bn of Bitcoin‑based USDT in the first 12 months, with a median goal of $5 bn and an ambitious ceiling of $10 bn. Whether demand materialises will be the key test of the project’s viability.

What to Watch Next

Key indicators to monitor include the actual volume of USDT transferred on Bitcoin after the Nov. 28 launch, the rollout of Lightning support in early 2027, and any security incidents involving the Arbitrum bridge. Additional signals will be the onboarding of partners such as UniSat and the broader adoption by exchanges, wallets and OTC networks. Observers will also watch how the privacy features influence enterprise interest compared with established stablecoin ecosystems on Ethereum and Tron.
