Franklin Templeton announced the launch of two Nasdaq‑listed exchange‑traded funds that automatically channel dividend payouts from U.S. equities into Bitcoin. The Franklin U.S. Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FBEQ) and the Franklin U.S. Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT) completed their SEC registration on October 22 and began trading on October 29, offering investors a novel way to gain Bitcoin exposure through traditional equity dividend streams.

Structure and investment methodology

According to Bitcoin Magazine, FBEQ tracks the VettaFi U.S. Large‑Cap 500 Bitcoin DRIP Index, while FIBT follows the VettaFi U.S. Innovation 100 Index. Both indexes start with 95% of assets in stocks and 5% in Bitcoin. When a constituent company pays a regular or special dividend, the cash is converted into Bitcoin at the market open the day after the ex‑date, increasing the Bitcoin allocation until the next quarterly rebalance. If the Bitcoin weight exceeds 5% before the review, it is trimmed to 4.5%; any spike above 20% triggers an automatic reset to 4.5% within two business days, with excess proceeds returned to equities. The funds do not hold Bitcoin on‑chain; exposure is achieved via Bitcoin exchange‑traded products, futures, options, and depositary receipts, some of which may be held through a Cayman Islands subsidiary.

Fees, management and regulatory details

Unchained reports that FBEQ carries a 0.09% annual expense ratio and FIBT a 0.19% ratio, with neither fund levying a 12b‑1 distribution fee. Both are managed by Franklin Advisory Services, with portfolio managers Dina Ting, Hailey Harris, Joe Diederich and Basit Amin named in the prospectuses filed with the SEC on October 27. The funds are sub‑advised by Franklin Templeton Institutional and listed under the ticker symbols FBEQ and FIBT on Nasdaq.

Initial market reception

In their first trading session, the ETFs recorded modest activity. Unchained calculated roughly $72,000 of total volume, with FBEQ trading 2,461 shares at a closing price of $25.28 and FIBT changing hands for 399 shares at $24.52. The limited turnover suggests cautious early adoption, though the products provide a unique conduit for investors seeking Bitcoin exposure without direct custody or wallet management.

What to watch next

Analysts will monitor the quarterly rebalancing process to see how dividend flows and Bitcoin price movements affect the 5% Bitcoin sleeve. Investor demand, especially from wealth‑management channels, will be a key indicator of the funds’ scalability. Additionally, regulatory scrutiny of Bitcoin‑linked ETFs could influence future product designs or fee structures.
