Fenris Creations, the Icelandic studio formerly known as CCP Games, announced that it is cutting a number of roles within its EVE Frontier blockchain‑gaming project. The decision follows a review of the game’s priorities, structure and development plans, according to a statement released after reporting by Vertical Slice.

Layoffs target specific project functions

The company said the reductions are limited to the EVE Frontier team and were proposed by the project’s own leadership. Engineering and quality‑assurance staff were among those publicly identified as affected. Fenris emphasized that the cuts are not part of a wider corporate restructuring, but rather a move toward a “more focused development structure” for the game.

Background to the ownership change

The layoffs come six months after Fenris Creations regained independence from South Korean publisher Pearl Abyss. In May, senior management and long‑term investors acquired the studio in a transaction valued at $120 million, after which the firm adopted the Fenris Creations name. At that time, the company assured that the ownership transition would involve no restructuring or layoffs. The latest statement positions the current staff changes as a response to the evolving needs of the EVE Frontier project.

EVE Frontier’s ongoing development

Despite the staffing cuts, Fenris confirmed that EVE Frontier remains in active development. The game migrated to Sui Testnet in March, opening its programmable Smart Assemblies to external developers and enabling custom logic for in‑game structures such as turrets, stargates and storage facilities. An $80,000 hackathon was also held to encourage community‑built modifications and tools that interact with the game’s API. The title is currently in its seventh three‑month “cycle,” during which new features are tested before a universe‑wide reset.

What to watch next

Observers will be looking for any impact the layoffs may have on EVE Frontier’s development timeline and upcoming feature releases. Further updates from Fenris Creations regarding the project’s roadmap, as well as community response to the recent hackathon, will provide insight into the game’s long‑term viability within the blockchain gaming space.
