North America: Inside the Growth of Agentic Commerce

Chainalysis examines the rise of agentic commerce and stable‑coin flows in North America’s $3 trillion crypto economy, finding rapid growth in AI‑driven on‑chain payments despite a modest U.S. contraction. Canada’s market bucked the trend, expanding 2.3%.

Points clés

  • U.S. crypto activity fell 2.2% while Canada grew 2.3% in the 2026 period.
  • Agentic commerce generated >138 M x402 transactions, 87% of which were sub‑cent micropayments.
  • Repeat‑funding rates rose from 70.6% to 89.3% for wallets launched between Q3 2025 and Q2 2026.
  • First‑hour spend rates jumped from 4% to 67%, showing faster wallet activation.
  • U.S. wallets accounted for 30% of geolocated AI‑to‑service payments and over 88% of model‑inference spend.

North America’s Crypto Landscape

Chainalysis asks how the region’s crypto economy is evolving as AI agents begin to pay on‑chain. Using on‑chain analytics, transaction logs, and wallet‑funding patterns, the firm tracks activity across the United States and Canada for the 12‑month period ending July 1 2026. The report highlights three pillars – AI‑driven agentic commerce, stable‑coin cross‑border remittances, and tokenized assets – to gauge the health and influence of the market.

Divergent Growth in the U.S. and Canada

The United States’ crypto economy, valued at $2.78 trillion, contracted 2.2% year‑over‑year, reflecting broader bear‑market pressures. In contrast, Canada’s $250 billion market expanded 2.3%, making it the G7’s most resilient peer‑to‑peer ecosystem, a trend Chainalysis attributes to its sizable immigrant community. Together, the two economies total $3.02 trillion, a modest 1.9% dip from the prior period.

Agentic Commerce Takes Off

Agentic commerce – AI agents using crypto for autonomous payments – is the fastest‑growing segment. Chainalysis estimates over 138 million x402 transactions on the Base blockchain, with >87% classified as micropayments (between a hundredth of a cent and a dime). Wallet‑funding behavior signals maturation: the share of wallets that received a second top‑up within 30 days rose from 70.6% (Q3 2025) to 89.3% (Q2 2026). Moreover, the median lag between funding and first spend collapsed from 73 days to 18 minutes, and the proportion of wallets spending within an hour jumped from 4% to 67%.

Who Is Buying What?

U.S.‑based AI agents dominate the on‑chain services market, capturing 30% of geolocated agent‑to‑service transactions. They account for 88.1% of model‑inference spend, 41.8% of payments to agent frameworks, and 23.2% of data‑API purchases. By comparison, Chinese‑linked wallets focus on security‑related services, contributing only 0.1% of inference spend. This geographic split suggests emerging AI‑nationalism and reflects differing cost structures for open‑weight versus metered models.

Stablecoins and Bitcoin Flows

Stable‑coin remittances to India, China, and the Philippines reached $2.36 billion, up 141% YoY, underscoring the U.S. role as a digital‑dollar exporter. Simultaneously, the United States became a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026, with large‑denomination transfers (> $10 million) accounting for 53,200 coins arriving, while smaller transfers remained net outbound. Chainalysis notes that 99.1% of stable‑coin order‑book volume stays pegged to the dollar, reinforcing the dollar’s dominance in cross‑border crypto finance.

Implications for Readers

The data suggest that while overall market size may wobble, the U.S. continues to set the agenda through AI‑driven payments and stable‑coin infrastructure. Canada’s modest growth hints at niche opportunities in peer‑to‑peer networks, especially among immigrant users. For participants, the shift toward micro‑transactions and rapid wallet activation points to a future where compliance will focus on funding events and behavioral patterns rather than individual payments.
