The move

Bitcoin pushed decisively through the $70,000 mark during Asian trading hours, extending a rally that has added more than $7,000 to its price in a week. The breakout came on above-average spot volume across major venues, with Coinbase showing a persistent premium over offshore exchanges — a signal traders often read as U.S. institutional buying.

The level had acted as a ceiling three times since spring. Each prior test was met with heavy selling from long-term holders taking profit; this time, order books on both spot and perpetual markets absorbed the supply without a meaningful pullback.

ETF flows do the heavy lifting

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs took in roughly $1.4 billion across three consecutive sessions, according to issuer filings. The largest funds accounted for most of the demand, but smaller products also posted their first positive week since August.

Flow data matters because ETF creations require issuers to buy spot bitcoin. At current prices, the three-day total represents about 20,000 BTC — more than four weeks of newly mined supply.

“This is the cleanest breakout we've seen all year. It's being bought in the spot market, not manufactured with leverage.”

Leverage stays in check

Perpetual funding rates rose but remain well below the extremes that preceded previous local tops. Open interest grew roughly in line with price, which suggests new positions are not dramatically over-extended.

Options markets tell a similar story. Call skew has turned positive for end-of-year expiries, while short-dated implied volatility rose only modestly — a sign traders are positioning for continuation rather than a squeeze.

What to watch next

Today's FOMC decision is the immediate risk event. A dovish surprise would likely extend the rally, while hawkish guidance could test whether ETF demand is strong enough to hold the breakout.

On-chain, analysts are watching whether long-term holders resume distribution above $70,000. So far, coins older than one year have barely moved, which historically has been a constructive sign for trend continuation.
